UKES Conference 2016 Update

The full programme for the 2016 Annual Evaluation Conference is now available from the conference website

The theme of the conference is Building a culture of evaluation: Challenging assumptions, unpacking complexity, championing change. The conference will seek to explore ways in which this can be achieved by:

  • Sharing practical experience of building such a culture - what worked, why it worked and the pitfalls
  • Updating on the Centre for Evaluating Complexity - the issues they are facing and potential solutions
  • Methodologies, new and old - unpacking complexity
  • Spreading the word about evaluation - developing toolkits, exploiting the available technology, using social media
  • Considering ways of bringing together evaluators from different professional sectors and backgrounds in new forums and interest groups

Programme highlights will include:

Keynote presentations from:

  • Dr Beatriz Garcia, Head of Research, Institute of Cultural Capital, University of Liverpool
  • Claire Hutchings, Head of Programme Quality, Oxfam
  • Professor Nigel Gilbert, Director, Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Energy-Environment-Food Nexus (CECAN)
  • Richard Thurston, Deputy Chief Social Researcher, Welsh Government

24 parallel sessions, comprising presentations from UK and international speakers.  Topics will include:

  • From assessing impact to assessing confidence about impact: Harnessing the potential of Process Tracing and Bayesian confidence updating to evaluate policy influence in complex and uncertain settings
  • What is EU-added value and how can it be measured?
  • How to design multi-layered, multi-stakeholder evaluation: Focus on challenge fund evaluation
  • Is there a Scandinavian evaluation tradition?
  • What happens when beneficiaries set the evaluation agenda? Lessons from the piloting of three models of beneficiary feedback mechanisms in seven international development projects
  • From recommendations to action: A Danish approach to championing change through evaluation
  • Exploring evaluation ‘rigour’ in conflict-affected and humanitarian situations
  • Culture? What culture? Is there a globalization of evaluation?

Abstracts for poster presentations can be submitted via the conference website until 11 April 2016.  Posters will be displayed in a dedicated space at the conference venue and a prize will be awarded for the best poster.

The registration fees have been maintained at the same level for the last three years and a considerable discount is offered to members. This year a special discounted two-year membership rate is also included in the fee options.  Full details are available from the registration section of the conference website.  Places are filling up rapidly so early booking is recommended!
